When kwELITE Real Estate agent Erin Nahorny found out in 2012 her young son, Sammy, had cancer and that only 4% of federal cancer research was allocated to children, she took action. She, along with family and great friends, formed nonprofit organization Sammy’s Superheroes, which donates funds to researchers and hospitals they feel are doing the most innovative research aimed at finding cures for childhood cancer. So when she went through all the necessary steps to become a realtor a few years ago, it was no surprise she took action again after achieving her license. She currently serves as the local chairwoman of the REALTORS® Political Action Committee (RPAC) and is on the state’s Governmental Affairs Committee.
RPAC is a voluntary political action committee whose membership consists of REALTORS® interested in actively and effectively protecting the real estate industry and the dream of homeownership by participating in government affairs at the local, state and federal levels.
Recently, Nahorny spent a week at the Nebraska Realtors Association Political Action Days in Lincoln, learning about the laws and bills that affect property owners.
“We’re a group that can help put funding behind candidates that support personal property owners’ rights,” Nahorny says.
She says the board is currently monitoring a big issue in the legislature regarding consumption tax, which will include the taxation of services, which will affect services from haircuts to real estate commissions.
“You can know you don’t have to sit at home and worry about your rights as a property owner,” says Nahorny, who notes she often hears from homeowners that they’ve never heard of RPAC. “There is a committee working for you to make sure you are protected.
“I’m super passionate about it. This is about every client, all our clients, and it’s also about protecting our individual businesses and industry as a whole.”
Whether it be through her work with Sammy’s, when she was at Center for Survivors or serving on RPAC and being a kwELITE realtor, Nahorny has always been passionate about giving back and helping her community.
“There are definitely things you can do to make a difference, but you have to be involved,” she stresses.
That’s why joining the team at kwELITE Real Estate was such an easy decision – she says that passion for giving back is a universal theme among everyone. The realtors’ and support staff’s willingness to be involved in various aspects of the community, outside of their jobs, gives them expertise and experiences that can help them better serve their clients.
“We definitely have agents who are committed to the community and doing things that are helping our community grow, develop and expand,” Nahorny says. “And I love that.”
