The History of This Famous City
Columbus was settled by the Columbus Town Company on May 28, 1856. This group actually took its name from Columbus, Ohio, where most of these settlers came from. The townsite was selected for its location on the proposed route of the transcontinental railroad. At the time of its initial settling, the land Columbus occupied still belonged to the Pawnee tribe. However, the Pawnee signed a treaty in 1857 where they gave up the bulk of their Nebraska lands. The town’s growth was slow until 1863, when construction began in Omaha on the transcontinental railroad. The Homestead Act attracted many settlers to the Plains and the railroad reached Columbus in June 1866.
